Thembinkosi “Vimbs” Mavimbela is a prolific South African double bassist, composer, bandleader, producer, and musical director. Born in Swalala, near Mbombela, he discovered his passion for music early, honing his ear through listening to records while navigating limited musical resources. He later studied at the University of the Witwatersrand under mentors including Bheki Khoza, Prof. Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph, and Leon Bosch, graduating with a double major in Composition and Performance. Additional formative experiences at the Welcome Soweto School of Music, MIAGI Youth Orchestra, and National Youth Jazz Festival helped shape his artistic and orchestral foundation.

Vimbs’ career spans orchestral and jazz arenas, performing with ensembles such as the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and South African Youth Orchestra, and appearing at prestigious venues like the Concertgebouw, Elbphilharmonie, and Konzerthaus. In jazz, he has collaborated with legends including Dr Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, and Dr Nduduzo Makhathini, and Afro-Jazz artists like Simphiwe Dana, Msaki, and Spha Mdlalose. His projects, including Milked Voice (2016), Igama (2020), and Basslexia (2021), explore innovative fusions of African and Western musical traditions, highlighting his mastery as both a performer and producer.
