In October 2025, the NWU Nuushonde journalism trainees participated in an immersive, work-integrated learning experience at the Aardklop Arts Festival. Now in its fourth year, the initiative enabled advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students to produce high quality multimedia content – including articles, photographs, videos, and social media coverage – while developing journalism skills under real-world deadlines.

Students experienced the festival’s scale, diversity and international reach, gaining insight into inclusivity in arts and culture and discovering the human stories behind performances. This hands-on environment fostered advanced skills in multimedia journalism, editorial decision-making, critical thinking, interviewing, and teamwork. The 2025 cohort also expanded multilingual coverage, allowing greater participation of non-Afrikaans speaking students and reflecting the programme’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Overall, the NWU Nuushonde training offered a transformative, practical learning experience that bridges classroom theory with professional practice, preparing students for careers in journalism and communication.
