Fede is an innovative musical collective formed in 2022 under the guidance of Mushroom Hour Half Hour, the Johannesburg-based independent label known for championing avant-garde and non-mainstream sounds. Emerging from Mushroom Hour’s SPAZA project—a rotating ensemble built on improvisation and collaborative composition—Fede? was originally assembled to explore the life and legacy of Makhanda ka Nxele, the renowned Xhosa prophet and leader.
Their work developed into a dynamic musical narrative that toured Europe in 2022, with performances at major festivals and venues including Roskilde Festival (Copenhagen), AB Club (Brussels), and Banlieues Bleues (Paris). After returning home, the group rebranded to Fede?, a South African colloquialism meaning “do you understand?”—a name that reflects their creative process of questioning, responding, and engaging critically through sound.
Fede? creates spontaneous, dialogue-driven music rooted in social, cultural, and historical themes. The collective features a powerful lineup of South African musicians: Nosisi Ngakane, Malcolm Jiyane, Gontse Makhene, Lungile Kunene, Linda Tshabalala, Nkosinathi Mathunjwa, and Ayanda Zalekile. Together, they continue to push musical boundaries, offering a sound that is both exploratory and deeply connected to South African heritage.
